Proton offers the following features which most other privacy-related companies do not:
THIRD-PARTY AUDITS: Any VPN/Email company can say they are secure. We place a lot of trust in the companies who promise to keep us private. ProtonMail and ProtonVPN have conducted numerous third-party audits of their software and claims. These are published online for full transparency. This means more to me than any promise made by the service provider.
LOCATION: ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland. They are not exposed to many government invasions available to 5-eyes, 9-eyes, and 14-eyes countries. U.S. court orders are ignored and only Swiss court orders are accepted.
EXTRA SECURITY: ProtonVPN offers secure-core and Tor nodes for extra protection.
REPUTATION: ProtonVPN is the same team which provides ProtonMail. They are very respected in the privacy and security community with no ties to marketing companies or private umbrella companies (which is very rare). They appear much more transparent than most VPNs.
FIREWALL: ProtonVPN works properly within a pfSense home firewall.
